This post made me think deeply. For weeks and weeks. I couldn't get it out of my mind.
It made me want to make changes. And so we did.
My girls are not signed up for anything on the weekends this fall. And I can tell you it has been WONDERFUL. We have them all to ourselves from Friday night to Monday morning. This post made me buy a huge desktop blotter type calendar. It is right in front of me before I say yes to anyone or anything. And I know that I can't overcrowd my weekends. Our weekdays are busy and I miss us all together terribly Monday through Friday. I just don't want to 'share' them on the weekend.
I've learned in our few free and open weekends this season that just planning the meals for the next week and shopping for them is enough. Just a little housework and some baking is enough. Just some laundry while they color is enough. Just going to Mass and coming home to play in the backyard is enough. (I know that is not for everyone. I'm not judging. I just know that for now, this fall season we need nothing)
Both Anna and Abigail used to play indoor tennis on Sunday late afternoons. All fall, winter and spring. This fall I didn't sign them up. Instead Scott (who played #1 for his college back in the day and taught tennis to children for extra teaching money summers when we were first married) takes Anna to the courts to play. And I stay home with Abigail to bake. It is the best Sunday late afternoons in the world... in the world.
These are not fancy pictures. I wouldn't have normally taken them except that when it was all over I wanted to remember the afternoon Abigail and I made a pie crust from scratch an made and apple pie. We did it together. She was delightful and charming. She and I loved every single minute together.
So here's to nothing (as much as I can control) on the weekends this fall. Winter might be a new story. I'll have to figure that out as I go along. But for now my home, our little family, and time is all I need.
