Surprise Snow Day

There are the kind of storms that they start talking about a week in advance.  And when you teach in a school there's a happy chatter among the teachers leading up to that big storm.  On Friday we had the opposite.  We had a surprise snow day.  I think they're the best kind.  The kind you don't know are coming.  It wasn't until Thursday late evening when I checked the weather that I even knew it was a possibility. The girls were already fast asleep.

And when they woke up in the morning they woke up to such a pretty world around them. I love winter.  (until late March that is)  Snow fall is so peaceful, so clean, so pretty.

Because it was our very first snow storm of this winter (weird) I documented it all.

I love it when the house is still dark inside (except for a little lamp here or there and my fairy lights)

It fluttered down like this all morning and into the afternoon

50

piling up on the siding and on the window sills.

making it the perfect backdrop of a day of cozy play

47

This is what they were like first thing in the morning.

And right after I turned off that video Anna said these exact words, "oh no! My viola! It's at school. And it's the weekend."

She had that panic look on her face because she gets a lot of good practice hours in on the weekends. (And the only night she leaves her viola at school is Thursday nights. She plays in Beaux Strings until 8:30 and then she needs her viola back at school for 7:30am. So it stays the night. And we had no idea that there might be a snow day when we picked her up at 8:30 on Thursday)

So we bundled up

and walked.

45

It was basically a white out.

44

We walked right in the middle of the storm.

44

It was so much fun.

And she was so relieved when the secretary let us in the building and unlocked the orchestra room.

Together at last!

43

And then we walked back home. They girls stayed out to play.

42

Right there in the middle of the snow coming down storm.

41

I love the way my colonial looks in the snow.

40

This house was meant for winter.

39

It was a thick, heavy snow. They very best kind of photos because it weighs the branches down in beauty.

38

And is perfect for a snowman.

37

They stayed out and played while I brought the music in to dry off.

35

36

And I couldn't get them to come in.

34

33

I love watching them together.

32

31

I whipped up a batch of tea biscuits with honey

30

29

And made the kitchen pretty.

They finally came in. Tea and biscuits and rock candy sticks melting in tea cups. With matted hair from playing in the snow and winter hats.

A garland of paper hearts looks so elegant with snow stuck to the window ~ nautures lace.

17

And we had lots of it

16

15

We did so much that day. And did a lot of nothing too. The TV never went on but we read and relaxed.

14

And then headed to the playroom to make valentines for family and friends far away.

13

Spontaneous dancing thrown in

It surprised me how she knew how to make a pop up card

Homemade pizza sauce simmered during the day and dough was rising on the counter. That night Scott cooked our dinner outside on the grill.... sooooOooooo good!

  2. One word... Perfection!!! My family & I live for snow day.. Especially my hubby as he is a school teacher ;) lol.. What kind of tea do your children drink? I adore drinking tea! I once tried serving it to my girls but they did not really seem to like it very much! I haven't tried serving it again to them but maybe I can give the one your kids like a try with my own! Beautiful family, I look forward & am uplifted by your posts Tara! Blessings, Lisa
