Christmas Getaway Weekend 2018
Scott and I adore Christmas... it's the most romantic holiday (sorry Valentines Day)... and we feel all in love all over again. There is so much on this blog about us and Christmas... it makes our heart swoon.
From finding our first Christmas ornaments
Finding our Christmas tree
And the story behind what Christmas Getaway Weekend is.
Yes, we love our home at Christmastime... there is no better place than the holly on your own front door. And that is true for us as well.
But this tradition is magical and it completely removes our family from the hustle and bustle that December can be. It lets us stop and soak in each other at this special time of year. So even though it seems hard to 'fit in' with the ages that the girls are now - we do it.
The memories are so precious to us. We all remember all of them each year:
2017 and here
2016 and here
2015 and here and here
2014
2013
2011
and for some strange reason I can't find on this blog the 2012 Christmas Getaway weekend when we went to Portsmouth NH... ugh!
Each year we choose a different place and this year we really struggled. We both really loved being in Vermont in the summer and knew that this place would be magical. I spent time on this website and this But it's a bit too far for just one night. The whole point of our getaway is no stress - relaxing and just being together. The Vermont idea needed more time. Maybe on a year when we could spend 2 nights. So we thought and thought and decided that a Connecticut Christmas could be wonderful too. We chose to go to Mystic - a sweet town on the shore. Scott found a lovely boutique hotel right among the main street shops and restaurants.
While Scott was checking us in the girls explored the little lobby. It was so so different than last year. Last year at the Viking Hotel there was so much hustle and bustle. This was so little and quaint. It really put us all at ease and was a wonderful escape.
They hot coffee, tea, and a hot chocolate bar. And cookies... which Anna loved!
It was a Saturday late afternoon and we decided to do some Christmas window shopping.
The famous drawbridge to let those summertime sailboats through
So so pretty
And this... shopping was lovely.
Of course we found an old bookstore and had to go in!
And we each picked a book.
This is the famous "Mystic Pizza" from this movie.
I just love old Main Streets all lit up at night.
And windows all lit up at Christmastime.
I wanted all of those glittery house.
Isn't Mystic beautiful?
We went back to our room to relax before dinner and to change. This was the girls bedroom area.
All dressed for dinner.
Oh how I love these girls of mine.
After dinner we had tickets to the Lantern Light Tour in Old Mystic Villiage. I told Anna to run to the car and grab her winter coat for the tour. We would be outside from 8-9:30 (in December) (in Connecticut) She reached back and her coat wasn't there.
Anna: I didn't pack it, I thought you did
Me: I told you to grab it? Really? We don't have a coat for you?
Both of Us: Panic!
Sigh... We really had no choice but to shop for Anna and a new jacket. Luckily we found one in a shop call the Black Dog. And she loved it!
Here the girls are at the end of the Lantern Light Tour. It's a lantern walk/play set on Christmas Eve 1876! It was 5 scenes where we were part of the Christmas Eve celebrations of long ago. It takes place at Mystic Seaport
Time to snuggle in jammies.
And read in bed.
The next morning we lingered over breakfast.
and relaxed in the lobby again.
We said goodbye and headed just up the street to Mystic Aquarium. They were showing a 4 D Roudolph movie which we all loved!
The girls visited their favorite aquarium animals.
And then it was time to head home. Tired, happy, content, and full of Christmas joy once again.
