September Weekening - normal is good

Getting into the grove of back to school here. Came home late on Friday trying to tie up loose ends in my classroom. I was grateful it was dark and rainy. No need to work to create cozy, the weather was doing that for me!

Friday was our homemade pizza breads and relaxing and an early bedtime!

Saturday was Abigail's viola tour group and her first Opus orchestra rehearsal. (so exciting) I used some of that time she was off and away to head quickly to my favorite thrift shops and found some treasures.

Scott and I also headed to our local nursery that was having a fall open house. We only brought home some farmstand veggies and planned out our dinner for that night. (homemade salsa)

Click HERE to my insta and click in Autumn '23 saved stories to see a little of that fall open house.

Saturday was also lots to do in our home (and some deep fall cleaning -- just a little bit)

Sunday was church and lots and lots of homework for our high school junior! I had plenty I had to get to for school as well. And email to send out for Monday morning to all of my families, some planning, and a bunch of things I'd jotted down on a to do list before leaving on Friday afternoon.

Yes, I would for sure say we are back in our groove, and normal is  good.

Autumn in the Living Room

"We are in for a spell of perfect weather now,

everyday luminous,

every night brimmed with stars.

Picnics at noon, supper by the applewood fire at night,

a walk in the cool moonlight before bed."

~Gladys Taber

Although I'm not quite 'ready' to do one whole post of our home this autumn, (there are still some rooms I've yet to take pictures in & there's a big project going on in our kitchen) I thought since it's September, I'd just jump right in with one room. This is our living room and it's all ready for cozy nights, sunny and cool afternoons of viola playing, and just greeting us with a bit of fall.

It's the room you see right as you enter our home from the front door and so I always want it to look pleasant.

I've done lots of different styles in this room over the years -- oh gosh, sometimes when I look back I cringe. But really it all comes back to what this room is 'supposed' to look like.

Our home was built in 1950 so I try to think back to that time and decorate in a more traditional way. This room is sunny a lot, and bright all the time with windows on two sides. It's a rather large room (for a colonial built in 1950).

The sconces were added in last year and even though we added them in, I think they are in keeping with the time period of this home.

There are actually no overhead ceiling lights in this room. It is entirely lit by lamps (and now the sconces). I would never all in ceiling lights to keep it traditional. This room is dark and cozy at night with all of the lamps, and bright and sunny during the day with the sun pouring in.

Here is how I decorated for this autumn:

1. My focus was on the mantle -- always playing off those sconces.

2. I changed the white lampshades to green to add more depth.

3. I found the hurricane glass for the candles at a thrift store and they are the perfect touch.

4. I layered lots of greens, berries, and oranges. Most of this I already had and just had to pick up a few things for the ends to pull it all together.

5. I love the way the green antique glass pulls all of that green together (from the wall color to the greens on the mantle)

6. I took these pictures before Anna's viola went back to college with her. This side table has some yummy fall potpourri in it and I framed a painted I had with a thrifted natural wood colored frame.

Such a cute scene in that painting.

7. Look at this darling vase! I gasped when I saw it and snatched it right up. I love the fluted opening and the crackle look of it. It's a tiny size and love it so much!

8. I added some fall stems in this green vase I've had since spring, and the glass is oh so beautiful, it's really a statement piece on its own.

This is looking in from the family room.

9. Books, books, books! I always decorate with books. This teacart is just the right size.

"She sand a song, a song of home,
A song that reach'd my heart.
Home, home, sweet, sweet home.
She sang the song of "Home Sweet Home,"
The song that reach'd my heart."

Early September Weekending

Friday ~

Relaxing

Homemade pizza sauce and our pizza breads -- actually when I came home from school on Friday (it was our 3rd day) I was so tired but I somehow dug up some energy and cleaned the whole house, top to bottom! (that first week of school I never got to all of my daily 'regular' cleaning things) And it felt so gooooood!

And we watched this! Dreamy, fall, books, NYC... what more could you want on the first day of September?!

Saturday ~

Catching Up

Well, if you scroll down you can see that I spent Saturday catching up with this blog of mine and all of the pictures! There were a lot of other things going on of course! We actually got to have lunch with friends that we traveled to China with 19 years ago to adopt our baby girls. It was wonderful to catch up together. Oh and there was baking too!

And building! Scott is working on a special project for our house! (I'll share more when it's done!)

Sunday ~

Traditioning

Mass - I am so blessed to have my family with me in the pew on Sunday morning. So so blessed!

We also went to the sweetest town that has a charming Main Street. Met up with my parents for ice cream too!

Monday ~

Searching

It's tricky to fit in college tours with a busy junior in high school. We went to two tours and information sessions in the summer and more on Monday. So so many more to go to help Abigail figure out just the right spot for her after high school.

And just like that we are ready for a new week at school!

First Day of School - selfie style

Wow! I'm certainly on a roll tonight! This is my fourth post! I am finally getting caught up! I did the back to school blessing, moving Anna back to college, Abigail's night before photo shoot, and now the first day of school!

All phone pictures of course but I finally got one from everyone this year!

Here is Abigail the second we were leaving and jumping out of the car on the first day:

Here's one from Anna (I think she thought I was asking to see her outfit on the first day)

Scott came through for me this year -- love this of him with his assistant principal

And finally me seconds before we opened out doors to meet our new fourth graders. (best team ever!) (in Brian's room)

The Night Before Junior Year

Strong, ready, happy...

Abigail is a junior in high school. We ran right over to her school to take these the night before the first day of school. We had just a few minutes (my first day was the next day too) but I'm so glad we did. I love them so much!

Happy new school year Abigail. It's going to be the best one yet!

You're In the Right Place ~ part three

Junior year. More confidence. No tears. Nervous just like any new school year is for any age. But excited too.

We were more confident this year too. What a difference it is between freshman year and junior year.

Ha! Even the packing. We didn't do anything until the day before. Freshman year we packed all summer!

Here she is the afternoon before moving in -- just starting to take things out of her closet. I folded. She organized into bags. We brought the bags downstairs and that was it. Easy!

The night before she wanted a cozy dinner that we all love, so I had my homemade pizza sauce simmering all day and Scott made his famous pizza bread. We got our mind off of all of our 'back to school' swirling thoughts and watched a funny movie.

Moving day!

Anna has a single this year and we were shocked to find that it was still a double room. Even better was that it's an corner room so she has windows with bright sunshine streaming in on both sides.

We brought everything up and got to work right away!

Even Abigail! Can you spot her in the closet? She was organizing all of the supplies!

Once we got all of the furniture arranged the way she wanted and hung a few tricky to hang things she wanted to do the rest over the next evening and day so we took her out to dinner in the city and had a wonderful meal!

Then back on campus - we walked to Cool Beans for a yummy chai tea for the drive home.

Love this campus!

Such a stunning campus! And I love the old buildings with ivy growing up them.

Time for goodbyes.

It's not 'nothing' junior year. Our whole house has to adjust it seems. There is a void and we miss her so much. I was actually looking forward to our own first day of school so that we could be distracted!

"You're in the right place, you're in the right place" was what I whispered into Anna's ear on that first goodbye as a squeezed her tight. I believed it even though first year tears were streaming down my face and wanted her to believe it too. She knows it now, believes it now. And that is everything.
